The word cynical comes from the French cynique (18th century), which in turn derives from the Latin cynicus, and the Greek kynikos, meaning dog-like or doggy, from kyon meaning dog. It was used to describe the infamous Cynics, a sect of Ancient Greek philosophers known for their disdain of societal norms.
